The Revolution of Peter the Great (Paperback, New edition): James Cracraft The Revolution of Peter the Great (Paperback, New edition)
James Cracraft
R686 Discovery Miles 6 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Many books chronicle the remarkable life of Russian tsar Peter the Great, but none analyze how his famous reforms actually took root and spread in Russia. In "The Revolution of Peter the Great," James Cracraft offers a brilliant new interpretation of this pivotal era.

Linking together and transcending Peter's many reforms of state and society, Cracraft argues, was nothing less than a cultural revolution. New ways of dress, elite social behavior, navigation, architecture, and image-making emerged along with expansive vocabularies for labeling new objects and activities. Russians learned how to build and sail warships; train, supply, and command a modern army; operate a new-style bureaucracy; conduct diplomacy on a par with the other European states; apply modern science; and conceptualize the new governing system. Throughout, Peter remains the central figure, and Cracraft discusses the shaping events of the tsar's youth, his inner circle, the resistance his reforms engendered, and the founding of the city that would embody his vision--St. Petersburg, which celebrated its tercentenary in 2003.

By century's end, Russia was poised to play a critical role in the Napoleonic wars and boasted an elite culture about to burst into its golden age. In this eloquent book, Cracraft illuminates an astonishing transformation that had enormous consequences for both Russia and Europe, indeed the world.

The Petrine Revolution in Russian Culture (Hardcover): James Cracraft The Petrine Revolution in Russian Culture (Hardcover)
James Cracraft
R2,246 Discovery Miles 22 460 Ships in 7 - 13 working days

The reforms initiated by Peter the Great transformed Russia not only into a European power, but into a European culture--a shift, argues James Cracraft, that was nothing less than revolutionary. The author of seminal works on visual culture in the Petrine era, Cracraft now turns his attention to the changes that occurred in Russian verbal culture.

The forceful institutionalization of the tsar's reforms--the establishment of a navy, modernization of the army, restructuring of the government, introduction of new arts and sciences--had an enormous impact on language. Cracraft details the transmission to Russia of contemporary European naval, military, bureaucratic, legal, scientific, and literary norms and their corresponding lexical and other linguistic effects. This crucial first stage in the development of a "modern" verbal culture in Russia saw the translation and publication of a wholly unprecedented number of textbooks and treatises; the establishment of new printing presses and the introduction of a new alphabet; the compilation, for the first time, of grammars and dictionaries of Russian; and the initial standardization, in consequence, of the modern Russian literary language. Peter's creation of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, the chief agency advancing these reforms, is also highlighted.

In the conclusion to his masterwork, Cracraft deftly pulls together the Petrine reforms in verbal and visual culture to portray a revolution that would have dramatic consequences for Russia, and for the world.

Revolutions and the Making of the Modern World - From Peter the Great to Karl Marx (Hardcover, New edition): James Cracraft Revolutions and the Making of the Modern World - From Peter the Great to Karl Marx (Hardcover, New edition)
James Cracraft; Edited by William Benton Whisenhunt
R3,389 Discovery Miles 33 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Professor James Cracraft is an established specialist on early modern Russian history, particularly the era of Peter the Great (1682-1725), tsar and first Russian emperor. This volume gathers some of the many key articles and reviews published by him over the last forty years and more in a wide variety of scholarly venues, some of which are not readily accessible. They constitute in sum important contributions not only to Russian history broadly understood, but also to the study of history itself. The collection will include a preface by the editor and an introduction by the author, where he will sum up his decades of historical work and point to new avenues of needed research, all the while emphasizing that "history" properly understood does not exist somewhere on its own but is the creation, however imperfect, of professional historians (as "chemistry", say, is properly understood as the work, however imperfect, of professional chemists).

Two Shining Souls - Jane Addams, Leo Tolstoy, and the Quest for Global Peace (Hardcover): James Cracraft Two Shining Souls - Jane Addams, Leo Tolstoy, and the Quest for Global Peace (Hardcover)
James Cracraft
R3,375 Discovery Miles 33 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In his new book, Two Shining Souls, James Cracraft explores the decades-long encounter of Jane Addams, the famous American social reformer and peace activist, with Leo Tolstoy, the acclaimed Russian writer and sage. He documents Tolstoy's influence in Progressive-era America and particularly on Addams's career, citing previously unknown or neglected sources. In addition to her study of Tolstoy's writings-his now largely forgotten religious tracts more than his celebrated fiction-Addams traveled to Russia to see him personally, a meeting that is recounted in detail. Late in her life, Addams described Tolstoy as a rare "shining soul," a term, Cracraft suggests, that applies equally well to her. His book adds an enduring religious dimension to Addams's rich legacy while newly delimiting, by contrast, the legacy of Tolstoy. The story of Addams and Tolstoy brings into focus issues of continuing public concern, including the often conflicting demands on the individual-particularly women-of family and society; the legitimacy of violence in pursuit of political aims; the problem of poverty; the role of government in social reform; and the place of religion in both public and private life. The distinctive ways in which these emblematic figures dealt with such controversial issues offer insights that may be valuable even today. Yet the single most important link between Addams and Tolstoy was their preoccupation with the question of peace, which they understood as a value subsuming all other values or goods. So Two Shining Souls is also about the invention and spread of "pacifism" in 19th-century Europe and America and the great crisis in its history precipitated by World War I.

Architectures of Russian Identity, 1500 to the Present (Paperback): James Cracraft, Daniel B. Rowland Architectures of Russian Identity, 1500 to the Present (Paperback)
James Cracraft, Daniel B. Rowland
R1,105 Discovery Miles 11 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the royal pew of Ivan the Terrible, to Catherine the Great's use of landscape, to the struggles between the Orthodox Church and preservationists in post-Soviet Yaroslavl—across five centuries of Russian history, Russian leaders have used architecture to project unity, identity, and power. Church architecture has inspired national cohesion and justified political control while representing the claims of religion in brick, wood, and stone. The architectural vocabulary of the Soviet state celebrated industrialization, mechanization, and communal life. Buildings and landscapes have expressed utopian urges as well as lofty spiritual goals. Country houses and memorials have encoded their own messages. In Architectures of Russian Identity, James Cracraft and Daniel Rowland gather a group of authors from a wide variety of backgrounds—including history and architectural history, linguistics, literary studies, geography, and political science—to survey the political and symbolic meanings of many different kinds of structures. Fourteen heavily illustrated chapters demonstrate the remarkable fertility of the theme of architecture, broadly defined, for a range of fields dealing with Russia and its surrounding territories. The authors engage key terms in contemporary historiography—identity, nationality, visual culture—and assess the applications of each in Russian contexts.

The Petrine Revolution in Russian Imagery (Hardcover, New): James Cracraft The Petrine Revolution in Russian Imagery (Hardcover, New)
James Cracraft
R2,439 Discovery Miles 24 390 Special order

This is the second volume of James Cracraft's comprehensive study of the cultural revolution engineered in Russia by Peter the Great. Throughout the study, Cracraft explores how medieval Muscovy became modern Russia, and situates the Petrine revolution in Russian visual and verbal culture in its wider political, economic, and social setting. In this volume, Cracraft considers the impact of Peter's intensive programme of Europeanization on the visual arts, and shows how modern forms of imagery came into being in Russia along with allied techniques of image-making. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources as well as numerous secondary works in Russian and other languages, Cracraft discusses the advent in Russia of painting in the Renaissance tradition, bronze and stone sculpture, and the modern graphic arts. He also discusses the decline of manuscript illumination, the rise of modern coinage, the production of new-style flags and altar cloths, and the arrival in Russia of the new cartography and the new heraldry. Special attention is drawn to the early history of the St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, and to the impact of Peter's programme on popular imagery and on the cult art of the Russian Orthodox Church. The text argues that the imagery of the Russian Empire can tell us as much or more about its dominant ethos and ideology as can the written texts normally studied by historians. This study is supported by numerous illustrations, many of them not previously published. It should appeal to art historians as well as to those interested in European or modern history.
